There are a lot of ways to ensure that your plants and trees are cared for, even if you go on vacation. Automatic portable drip irrigation systems can take up the gardening slack if you have to be away from your garden or if your garden is removed from where you live.

There are fixed location irrigation systems and portable drip irrigation systems.

You can use a combination of approaches. If you have indoor plants and plants outside, you will need a variety of indoor and outdoor watering systems.

First, you need to find out what zone you are in.

Next decide if you are gardening inside or outdoors and what your needs are for your plants to stay optimally watered. A planting guide is a big help when determining what you are going to need. It is also essential to decide  what your spending limits are. There are some very ingenious methods to keeping a beautiful yard thriving all summer long.

Outdoor Solutions

Watering globes – You fill the watering globe and then invert it and push the narrow end into the soil. As your soil dries out, water is pulled from the globe via the tapered, hollow end.

Self-watering hanging baskets – These have a reservoir at the bottom of the basket allowing the plant to draw up water.

Watering spikes device – Similar to the watering globes, with the difference being you supply the reservoir. You will attach a plastic bottle filled with water to the spike, set the drip rate, and insert the spike into your plant’s soil.

Self-watering window boxes – These also have reservoirs for water that the plants can draw water out of as needed.

Raised bench planter – A deep enough to plant several different plants. This also has a reservoir for water.

Soaker hoses – These are really useful when planting in rows. You can plant it in two rows and lay the soaker hose between the rows for even coverage.

The Watering Rock – This is a portable drip irrigation system . You will be able to reach the apple tree you planted in the middle of the field (despite what your spouse said about it being hard to water there). The Rock has a five-gallon reservoir that can water your plants for days and can be moved at will to be used anywhere in the yard and garden.

Indoor Solutions

Drip systems – These systems can be moved, but they are best suited to being a stationary water source for plants that will not be moved much.

These are great for those who have less than ideal memories when caring for our plants as they run on timers.

Make sure you check out available portable drip irrigation system.

Claber Oasis Evolution System is an excellent example of a drip system. It is well suited to a patio or an indoor living space. It has to sit two and a half feet above the plants to be watered. The selling point for this system is that it can be set up to water for 28 days.

MAYiT also has a Drip system that can be activated remotely, so if you are not home, you can still water your plants. That is pretty cool.

The Watering Rock – This is a unique automatic portable drip irrigation systems kit which will make it easier for you to reach the apple tree you planted in the middle of the field despite what your spouse said about it being hard to water there. The Rock has a five-gallon reservoir that can irrigate your plants for days and be moved at will to be used anywhere in the house. This is the best bang for your buck because of its ability to do double duty indoors and out!

Draw systems – These are irrigation systems that use a wick, usually a cotton string. You put water in a bucket(or smaller if your plant is not very big), then soak a piece of cotton string in the water. Place the container in a position that leaves the top of the reservoir bucket above the highest container. Tie a weight on one end of your wick, place it in the water reservoir. Plant other end in a planter about three inches deep.

Tips for Gardening

Planting Guides

Consult planting guides when determining your planting zones. Planting zones were created by the USDA to help gardeners determine what plant hardiness zone they are in and what plants will thrive best in your zone.

Use planting guides to ensure that the plants you choose will grow in your environment.
Start small; you can expand later if you need to.

Planting Zones

Planting zones will determine what you can plant outside where you live and when you should plant it. For example, the planting zone for Denver, Colorado, is 5B, according to the map released in 2012.
Be sure there are no areas to collect water that will stagnate and invite mosquitos to come and play at your house.

Make sure you actually receive all of the parts to any system you buy. Test out all of the equipment before setup.

The best way to approach setting your budget before you start looking for garden supplies is to do it before getting to the gardening center.

The most crucial tip to receive is: Have fun!
